What is Paid Parental Leave (PPL)?

Paid Parental Leave or “PPL” is offered to employees who have one year of service and are needing to take time off to bond with a newborn or for adoption purposes. PPL will provide 8 weeks of paid time off.

Who is eligible for Paid Parental Leave?

All BHGE employees are eligible for Paid Parental Leave after one year of service with the company. Prior service with either GE Oil & Gas or BHI counts towards eligibility.

I took all of my Paid Parental Leave at GE Oil & Gas in 2018. Can I take it again under the BHGE plan?

If you have taken Paid Parental Leave in the last 12 months for the birth or adoption of a child, you may not take Paid Parental Leave again for that child. You will be eligible for Paid Parental Leave if you have or adopt a child in the future.

My wife is due to give birth to our child on January 3, 2019. How do I apply for Paid Parental Leave? When should I apply?

You can apply on or after January 1, 2019, by calling Sedgwick at (877) 423-8677.

Can I take Paid Parental Leave in two-week increments within the first 12 months of my child's life?

Paid Parental Leave must be taken continuously. For example, if you choose to take just 4 weeks of leave, you will forfeit the remaining 4 weeks.

I am eligible for Paid Family Leave in the state in which I live. How does the pay I receive under BHGE's Paid Parental Leave coordinate?

BHGE's Paid Parental Leave will be offset by any state disability you receive. For example, if you live in California and receive 60% of your pay from the state, Paid Parental Leave will pay 40%. You will not receive more than 100%.

I am having a baby. How much time off will I receive?

Mothers will be able to take Short-Term Disability (STD) followed by Paid Parental Leave when STD ends.

Fathers will be able to take up to 8 weeks of paid time off under the Paid Parental Leave policy.

My spouse and I both work for BHGE. Can we both take Paid Parental Leave?

Yes. Both employees can take 8 weeks of Paid Parental Leave each. Note that FMLA only provides a combination of 12 weeks for spouses who work for the same employer.

How do I apply for Paid Parental Leave?

Beginning January 1, 2019, call Sedgwick at (877) 423-8677 to initiate your Paid Parental Leave. Sedgwick will confirm your eligibility and open a claim for you.

Does FMLA extend Paid Parental Leave?

No. FMLA runs concurrently with Paid Parental Leave. If you take 8 weeks of Paid Parental Leave you may an additional 4 weeks of unpaid FMLA for the birth or adoption of a child, if you are eligible.

If I foster a child can I take Paid Parental Leave?

No. You are not eligible for Paid Parental Leave if you foster a child. Paid Parental Leave is only for the birth or adoption of a child. However, you may be eligible for FMLA if you foster a child.

I began Short-Term Disability for the birth of a child in 2018 that will continue into 2019. Do I need to contact Sedgwick to initiate Paid Parental Leave?

Yes. Sedgwick will not assume you want to continue your absence through Paid Parental Leave. Beginning January 1, 2019, contact Sedgwick at (877) 423-8677 to initiate your Paid Parental Leave. Sedgwick will confirm your eligibility and open a claim for you.
